What is "Bee-MEHR"?

Understanding multilingualism as an opportunity

The project, led by Prof. Dr. Barbara Mertins (Faculty of Cultural Studies, Institute for Diversity Studies), is investigating how a new approach to multilingualism can be created in the educational context. The project takes into account important influencing factors such as socio-economic status, individual beliefs and the quantity and quality of linguistic input. The aim is to make scientific findings more accessible and to break down prejudices against multilingualism.

Raising awareness of multilingualism

BeeMEHR aims to sensitize teachers, educators and parents to a well-founded, scientific understanding of multilingualism. The aim is to critically question the often false equation of “migration background” and “poor reading performance” and to promote new ways of acting through education and coaching. Seminars, lectures and coaching sessions are offered to put the knowledge gained into practice.

Digital support for language development

Another goal is to promote the reading and writing skills of children, especially those with language difficulties, regardless of their background. To this end, a digital learning platform and an app are being developed to promote metalinguistic awareness and cognitive control, thus creating the basis for better language acquisition.

Diverse collaborations

BeeMEHR cooperates with various partners in Herne, including the St. Anna Catholic Family Center, the St. Elisabethgruppe daycare centre, the municipal Catholic elementary school on Bergstrasse, the Islamic community of Herne-Röhlinghausen e. V. and Ruhrwerk e. V.. This cooperation gives the project access to a large number of people from different social, cultural and linguistic contexts.

The project is funded as part of the “Integration through Education” program and will run for three years.
